How do I apply the decal? It looks like it has a lot of separate pieces.
Your decal will arrive with a paper transfer tape over the top, holding all the numbers and markings in perfect alignment. Application is simple:
- Prep the Rod: Start with a clean, dry fishing rod. Wipe the application area with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils or dirt.
- Peel the Backing: Carefully peel the paper backing away, ensuring all the vinyl numbers and lines stick to the clear transfer tape.
- Apply to Rod: Align the "0" mark where you want your measurement to start and carefully lay the decal down, smoothing it from one end to the other to prevent bubbles.
- Burnish (Rub) Firmly: Apply pressure with your thumb across the decal evenly to ensure the vinyl adheres to the rod flat.
- Remove Transfer Tape: Slowly peel the clear transfer tape off at a sharp angle. The vinyl markings will remain on the rod.
Will this decal fit on a tapered fishing rod?
Yes. We use Oracal 751, which is a premium cast vinyl. Cast vinyl is specifically engineered to conform to complex curves and tapers without shrinking, peeling, or bubbling. It will wrap smoothly around your rod blank for a paint-like finish.
What length is the decal and will it fit my specific rod?
Our standard Rod Ruler is 36" Inches long. This length is designed to fit on the most common sizes of inshore and bass fishing rods. Simply start the decal where you prefer and trim any excess length from the tip end with a sharp blade for a custom fit.
How durable is the Rod Ruler? Is it waterproof?
This decal is built to last. It's cut from high-performance Oracal 751 cast vinyl, which is rated for 7-8 years of outdoor durability. It is 100% waterproof and highly resistant to UV rays, saltwater, and the typical wear and tear that fishing gear endures.
Will the numbers and markings rub off over time?
No, it's unlikely for them to rub off. This is a die-cut decal, which means the numbers and lines are cut directly from a solid sheet of colored vinyl. There is no ink printed on the surface. The color is part of the material itself and goes all the way through.
If used on a telescoping or extendable fishing rod, the numbers may get worn down from the rod sliding up and down. This can be minimized by slowly opening and closing the rod. The film is 2 mils thick (1/2 thickness of a sheet of paper) so it is plenty thin to fit under most telescoping rods, however we do not guarantee fitment on telescoping or extendable fishing rods. Our competitors use one piece thick printed vinl, which is completely unable to be used on telescoping rods. Use at your own risk.
Can I remove the decal later? Will it damage my rod or leave a sticky residue?
Yes, the decal can be removed without harming your rod. The best method is to gently heat it with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive. Once warm, you can peel it off. Any minor adhesive residue can be easily cleaned with rubbing alcohol or a citrus-based cleaner.
How accurate are the measurements on the ruler?
The rulers are printed from professionally calibrated digital files to ensure measurement accuracy. You can count on it for measuring your catch reliably.
